Walter P. Chrysler started his automobile company in 1925. Mr. Chrysler created a product lineup with little overlap or cross-brand competition. Customers could move up the Chrysler family as they progressed up the economic ladder. The first step on Chrysler's ladder was the 'low price' Plymouth brand. Other 'steps' included Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler.
Chrysler's engineers went to town on the 1940 Plymouth line, offering all-new bodies over highly engineered chassis and carefully built, smooth-performing six-cylinder engines. The P10 De Luxe series sported a new 117-inch wheelbase, an increase of three inches over the previous model, and rode on a sturdy X-braced box-section frame. Plymouth advertised the cars' "airplane-type" (tubular) shock absorbers, a rarity at the time.
