Holden HG Station Wagon
Holden is an Australian carmaker that operates in Australasia. The company was founded in 1856 as a saddlery manufacturer. In 1908 it moved into the automotive field, before becoming a subsidiary of the United States-based General Motors (GM) in 1931. Until 1953 the company built cars from imported “knock down kits” sourced from Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Vauxhall.
1968's Holden HK was the first in the series of the 4th major redesign of large Holden cars. HK models were both larger and heavier than their predecessors and the range would ultimately include thirteen different models. Initially offered in three trim levels, each available in four-door sedan and five-door station wagon body styles, in March 1968 the range was expanded with the release of two utilities and a panel van variant. July 1968 saw the release of an additional HK sedan and three coupe models. 161-cubic-inch and 186-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engines were carried over from the HR series, and a 307-cubic-inch Chevrolet V8 was now offered as an option on all models.
The mainly cosmetically different Holden HT was introduced in May 1969 with the release of the main saloon, station wagon and utility variants. This was followed in June 1969 by the top ot the range saloon and coupés. 161-cubic-inch and 186-cubic-inch six-cylinder engines were carried over from the HK range, but Australian manufactured 253-cubic-inch and 308-cubic-inch V8 engines replaced the imported 307-cubic-inch V8.
The Holden HG range was introduced on 26 July 1970. Changes from the previous model included new grilles and body decorations as well as new safety features, colours and trim designs. Engines were carried over from the HT, but a new 3-speed "Tri-Matic" automatic transmission was offered for the first time on the full-size Holden range.
