The Rambler American was made by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) between 1958 and 1969.
Based on the earlier Nash Rambler, the American was originally available only as a two-door sedan with a a 195.6cui flathead six. A two-door station wagon was added to the line in 1959, then in 1960 a four-door sedan as well.
In 1961 the range was totally restyled (but still on the old car's platform), and a four-door station wagon and a two-door convertible were added to the range. In 1962 and 1963 the range remained unchanged apart from various optional gear boxes.
In 1964 American was given what would be its only completely new design. It was available as a 2-door convertible, 2-door hardtop, 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and 4-door station wagon. Little was changed in 1965, but in 1966 the whole range was given a very square, boxy look.
In 1966, 1967 and 1968 the range of body styles availablke was gradually pared back, but the style remained virtually unchanged.
In 1970 a completely redesigned model, the AMC Hornet, replaced the American.
