Citroen Ami 8 Break
The Ami series of cars was based on the proven underpinnings of the 2CV and built by Citroen between 1967 and 1979.
The range consists of the Ami 6 from 1966 to 1969, the Ami 8 from 1969 to 1979 and the Ami Super from 1973 to 1976.
The 1961 Ami 6 sedan is distinguished by an unusual reverse-raked rear window, similar in style to the 1959 Ford Anglia 105E in Britain. A Break version was launched in September 1964 and proved to be more successful than the Berline - it looked less unconventional than the Berline and was also used as the basis for the Service van.
The Ami 6 was replaced in 1970 by the mechanically similar but more conventionally styled Ami 8 saloon, which has a fastback rear window. It was redesigned by the French car design and bodywork company, Heuliez. Most notable changes were the front part and bonnet and the sloping, rather than inverted, rear window on the saloon. The estate version of the Ami 8 had a similar general appearance to that of the Ami 6.
The Ami 6 was the first car in the world to be fitted with rectangular headlights - a styling motif that would subsequently spread worldwide. The interior borrowed the single spoke steering wheel, door handles and minor controls of the Citroen DS, and the seats were easily removable. Sales pitches of the Ami included photographs of the seats being used as picnic chairs.
An ambulance version of the Break was supplied by the factory. Designed by the Bureau d'Etudes, it was built by Filca.
1,840,396 cars of all versions were made.
