The Volkswagen Type 1 is a two-door, four passenger, rear-engine economy car by German manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1930s, the Type 1 was only produced in significant numbers from 1945, when the model was internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed as the Volkswagen (or "People's Car").

The model became widely known in its home country as the Käfer (German for "beetle") and was later marketed as such in Germany, and as the Volkswagen Beetle or Bug (in local languages) in other countries. For example, in France it was known as the Coccinelle or Cox (French for ladybird/ladybug).

The car was produced in: Wolfsburg, Hanover, Emden, Ingolstadt and Osnabrück in Germany; Melbourne, Australia; Brussels, Belgium; São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil; Jakarta, Indonesia; Dublin, Ireland; Shah Alam, Malaysia; Puebla, Puebla, Mexico; Auckland, New Zealand; Lagos, Nigeria; Manila, Philippines; Uitenhage, South Africa; Sarajevo, Yugoslavia; Valencia, Venezuela; and Heinola, Finland. As the Type 1 was manufactured in Central and South America until 2003, vehicles in that region have not been listed.

More than 21.5 million examples have been made worldwide. Although there were many variants of the car they have all been listed here under “Type 1” as they all share the same basic bodyshape and layout and are extremely difficult to differentiate between using Streetview views.

Movie Credits: The Herbie Movies, starting with “The Love Bug” in 1968.
