The Corvette is a sports car made by Chevrolet since 1953 as a concept show car
Released in 1953 with a 235cu in inline six that powered all other Chevrolet models but with modification and using a two-speed Powerglide automatic 0-60 mph time was 11.5 seconds. Late in 1955 a new 195hp 265cu in small-block V8 became available with a three-speed manual transmission.
Production of the second generation of Corvette started in the 1963 model year and ended in 1967. Introducing a new name, "Sting Ray", the 1963 model was the first year for a Corvette coupé and it featured a distinctive tapering rear deck. The Sting Ray featured hidden headlamps, non-functional hood vents, and an independent rear suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes were introduced in 1965, as was a "big block" engine option: the 396 cu in (6.49 L) V8.
In 1968, both the Corvette body and interior were completely redesigned. As before, the car was available in either coupe or convertible models, but coupes had new removable roof panels (T-tops) and a removable rear window. The styling was heavily influenced by a concept car, the Mako Shark II designed by Larry Shinoda initiated in early 1964. In 1970, fender flares were designed into the body contours, and a special ZR1 package added racing suspension, brakes, stabilizer bars, and other high performance components .
1973 started Corvette's transformation from muscle to touring sports car, and in 1974, a new rear bumper system replaced the squared tail and chrome rear bumper blades introduced in 1968 with a trim, tapering urethane cover carrying an integral license plate holder and recesses for the trademark round taillights.
